THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2291S Date of Senate Approval 3/21/91 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #22: Change in Foreign Language Requirement in General Education Effective Date: Fall '91 for Catalog and Fall '90 for adoption of practice Delete: Page 50 "Students must complete a two-course sequence of six hours in a single foreign or classical language. Students whose scores on a placement exam show them to be at the intermediate level may satisfy this requirement by taking one intermediate-level course." Add: Page 50 "Students must fulfill the Foreign language requirement by demonstrating proficiency through the 120 level. Students may accomplish this by completing a two-course sequence of six hours in a single foreign or classical language or by performance in the UNCA placement exams. (Presently, exams are offered in French, German and Spanish.) Based on performance, students may gain waivers for all or part of the Foreign Language requirement." Environmental Impact: UNCA is entering more and more students with significant foreign language experience in high school. This proposal would significantly shrink the demand for introductory level sections in French, German and Spanish. Rationale: Presently, UNCA cannot meet the demand of the number of students requesting to take a foreign language upon entry to UNCA. Typically students want (and should) take these classes in their Freshman year when they can build on their studies in high school. Typically these classes are full before Freshman can register as a result of the backlog of upper classmen taking the requirement. Additionally, the present policy demands that students who already are proficient at the introductory level must take a course at the intermediate level. A requirement not paralleled by other General Education areas.
