THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0690F Date of Senate Approval 10/11/90 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC 6: Request catalog and policy changes for MLA Program Effective: Spring Semester 1991 1) Catalog change: Change prefix for all MLA courses from "Humanities" ("HUM") to "MLA." Rationale: The current system is potentially confusing to off-campus readers of our transcripts (e.g., employers, graduate school admissions officers). Under the current system even our social science and natural science courses have a "HUM" prefix. 2) Change the current Senate policy statement, which restricts undergraduate courses that the MLA program may cross- list to those numbered 400 and above, to permit cross-listing of 300-level courses (with approval of Graduate Council and APC). Rationale: In many departments (e.g., History) the distinction between 300- and 400-level courses is not a matter of rigor. In such cases some 300-level courses would be appropriate for cross-listing as graduate courses, while some 400-level courses would not. Current policy does not take this into account. Moreover, current policy needlessly restricts the number of courses available for cross-listing as graduate courses (since there are relatively few 400-level courses in most departments). This circumstance makes it more expensive to operate the MLA program, because more "graduate only" courses must be given. This is an especially serious problem during this period of fiscal stringency. This policy is to be reviewed by APC during 1993-94.
