        Statement of Faculty Senate Action: 



                  IDC #6:  Recommendations from Mathematics Self-Study





        The University Planning Council has reviewed the Mathematics Department

        Self-study along with the Individual Program Summary conducted by UNC

        General Administration and the Program Assessment Survey conducted by

        the Office of Institutional Research.  The UPC notes with concern the

        evidence of a serious problem of student morale.  We recommend that the

        Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs review the overall effectiveness of

        the Mathematics Department with all of its faculty and that he request a

        plan for improvement, developed with the participation of all

        mathematics faculty.  We further recommend that the plan be submitted by

        September 30, 1990, and that a follow-up Program Assessment Survey to

        measure improvements be conducted by the Office of Institutional

        Research by April 30, 1991.  





             The membership of the University Planning Council received and

        reviewed the self study of the mathematics program which submitted

        recommendations for study by the UPC.  The following recommendations

        were endorsed by the UPC.  



             -- That the department develop the newsletters, mailings and

             evaluation survey forms set forth in the section on Future Goals

             and Aspirations.

             --That the department be given the opportunity to purchase

             additional software and hardware as suggested in the self- study

             pending the availability of funds.  



             --That the teaching evaluation system listed in part g of section 7

             be implemented.  



             --That clerical assistance be provided as funds become available.
