ADD after the section on "Incompletes" on page 45 of the catalog: In Progress An instructor may give an in progress (IP) grade to a student enrolled in a specifically designated research course when the research has not been completed by the end of the semester. Following completion of the research university procedures for changing grades will be used to replace the IP with a regular grade. Page 2 RATIONALE: Research seldom fits neatly into the standard semester timeframe. At present students who do not complete their research must be given an I. However, this grade carries another deadline that must be met or the I mutates into an F. A grade of IP recognizes that research is by its nature capricious and that a student should not be penalized for that. The use of IP for a particular course must be approved by the APC and must be specified in the course description.
