THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3690S Date of Senate Approval 3/29/90 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC #24: Falsified Application Policy Effective Date: Fall, 1990 The purpose of this proposal is to formalize a procedure that has already been in use for several years. It consists of a brief addition to the Catalog and a longer procedure statement for internal use only. CATALOG: Add to the end of the first paragraph on page 5 the following statement: Students whose applications to UNCA contain false statements or which fail to disclose all post-secondary institutions attended are subject to disciplinary action which may include dismissal from the University. INTERNAL PROCEDURE: If the student has not yet enrolled in UNCA, the Director of Admissions will write the student rescinding their acceptance to UNCA and asking for an explanation of the falsified application. If the explanation is satisfactory in the opinion of the Enrollment Services Advisory Committee (or the Director of Admissions alone if the falsification is minor), the student may be accepted subject to such further conditions Page 2 as seem appropriate. If the student has already enrolled at UNCA, the Director of Admissions will meet with the student whose application appears to be falsified. Except for minor inadvertent errors, students who are suspected of falsifying their applications will be referred to the Enrollment Services Advisory Committee for a hearing. The Committee will recommend appropriate further action to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management. In the case of students who fail to disclose previous post-secondary work, ordinarily the minimum penalty will be that UNCA will accept no transfer credit for work at institutions not disclosed at the time of application to UNCA. If in the judgment of the Committee the falsification is serious, a letter describing what the student did and outlining any sanctions imposed will be placed in the student's file in the office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Two kinds of cases will be referred to the Student Judicial System. Cases in which the student disputes the charge and cases which the Committee thinks might warrant dismissal from the University require a more careful hearing than an informal faculty committee review can offer. In these cases the more elaborate hearings procedure of the Judicial System seems warranted. RATIONALE: Some students falsify their applications to UNCA. The usual case that comes to the attention of the Enrollment Services Advisory Committee is the omission of post-secondary work from the application. We become aware of these cases after the student has been admitted when they present transcripts from these previous institutions trying to get transfer credit. These cases are hard to handle. Often the student would have been rejected had we known of the previous work. On the other hand, their success at UNCA is evidence that they should have been accepted. The purpose of this policy is to convey to the student the seriousness of his or her error while reserving to UNCA the right to serious disciplinary action if necessary.
