THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3590S Date of Senate Approval 3/29/90 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC #23: Catalog Changes in Specific Education Programs Effective Date: Fall, 1990 CATALOG CHANGES IN ART SECTION OF THE CATALOG Delete: Last line of first paragraph of Bachelor of Arts: Students wishing to add K-12 Certification are advised to elect this track. Delete: BFA with K-12 Teacher Certification BA with K-12 Teacher Certification, top p. 72 Add: Teacher Certification in Art The Bachelor of Arts with Teacher Certification in Art is designed for students who want to teach art. Students wishing to teach also may elect the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and Teacher Certification in Art. However, the BFA is not recommended as easily compatible with teacher certification due to the 30 additional hours required for the BFA degree. (See education section of the catalog.) I. Required courses in the major--42 hours total, including the following: 100, 101, 102, 140 (the introductory core), 210 or 220, 225, 230 or 240, 381, 382, 383, 384, 451, and 490. In addition three hours must be taken from Studio Art offerings. Page 2 II. Required courses outside the major--40 hours total, including the following: EDUC 310, 300, 380, 455, and 492, PSYC 100, 217, 220 and 316 or equivalent, SOC 240, and CSCI 126 or equivalent. III. Foreign Language requirement--A minimum of six semester hours. IV. Other departmental requirements--a Senior Comprehensive Exam and a Senior Exhibition. (A BA Guideline pamphlet is available through the Art department which gives specific directions. Rationale: This program allows students to meet major requirements at the same time as they meet SDPI and NCATE competencies. For example, Art 490, 451 and 225 count toward the major in the Teacher Certification in Art program, but do not in the BA and BFA programs. Note the Teacher Certification in Art program requires more semester hours than the BA program, but education students electing the previous BA program plus teacher certification would have taken seven more hours than students in the current Teacher Certification in Art program since the above mentioned courses which are required to meet certification competencies did not count toward the major in the BA or BFA programs. Note: students may still elect either the BA or BFA programs and complete the Art certification requirements in the education section of the catalog. This new program can be completed in 131 hours, including general education requirements. This meets the new General Administration requirements. The previous programs did not. CHANGES IN DRAMA SECTION OF THE CATALOG Delete: Teacher Certification in Drama (entire paragraph), p. 108 Add: Teacher Certification in Drama Students majoring in drama who wish to teach may choose one of three options: teacher certification in Theatre Arts (K-12), elementary certification (K-6), or middle school certification (6-9). I. Required courses in the major-45 hours, including 101, 102, 111, 112, 121, 122, 124, 210, 214, 241, 242, 317, 355, 461, 462. II. Required courses outside the major--44 hours, including EDUC 310, 312 or 313, 300, 380, 455, and 492, PSYC 100, 217, 200 and 316 or equivalent, SOC 240, LIT 246 and 354, HF 137. III. Other departmental requirements--Competency demonstration in the area of production and performance through active participation in productions of the Theatre of The University of North Carolina at Asheville. Procedures for fulfilling the competency demonstration requirement should be obtained from the department chairman. Rationale: This program allows students to meet major requirements at the same time as they meet SDPI and NCATE competencies. Note this program requires more semester hours than the Program in Drama, but education students electing the previous program would have taken two more hours than students in the current program since the above mentioned courses which are required to meet certification competencies Page 3 did not count toward the major in the Program in Drama. This new program can be completed in 136 hours, including general education requirements. This meets the new General Administration requirements. The previous program did not. Add: Last line of Program in The Teaching of English, p. 153: ...190, 201, and Drama 317.
