THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3090S Date of Senate Approval 3/8/90 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: FWDC Document #7: COMPOSITION OF THE GRADUATE COUNCIL Proposed change The Graduate Council should be composed of nine members. These will include one appointee from the Office of Academic Affairs, the Director of the MLA program, the Director of the Humanities Program, and six other faculty members. The six faculty members should include two representatives from each of the three broad divisions of the UNCA faculty: Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Terms should be for two years, with three of the six faculty members rotating off the Council each year and three new faculty members appointed in their place. Each year two of the faculty members are to be elected by the Senate and one of the faculty members is to be appointed by the VCAA. The Director of the MLA Program shall not Chair the Graduate Council. Effective Date: Spring, 1990 Current policy No Senate approved policy exists. The Director of the MLA Program with the approval of the VCAA has asked faculty to serve on the Council. Rationale Allowing the Senate to elect faculty to the MLA assures a broad representation on the Graduate Council and reduces the risk of any appearance of the Graduate Council as an entity operating outside of the overall faculty. Activities of the MLA program do impact resources on the UNCA campus so it is crucial that the MLA Program be tightly integrated with the entire UNCA curriculum at all levels, particularly in view of its impact upon the undergraduate program in staffing requirements and cross-listed offerings. Recommendation: The Council, in consultation with the VCAA, should develop a formal list of responsibilities for inclusion in the Faculty Handbook and report the results of their discussion back to the Senate by the first Senate meeting in the Spring of 1991.
