THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2990S Date of Senate Approval 3/8/90 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: FWDC Document #6 CHANGE IN TERM OF SERVICE ON THE FELDMAN COMMITTEE Proposed change to FWDC Document #7, 1982-83, and FWDC Document #1, 1988-89: II. Review of Nominations Nominations shall be reviewed by the Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorship Fund Committee composed of six members of the full-time faculty. Terms of service shall be two years from September 1 to August 31; terms shall be staggered so that only three new members are selected each year. Three new members shall be selected each year: one from the Faculty Welfare and Development Committee, one from the University Research Council, and one from the University Teaching Council. Chairs of these respective committees shall consult to assure all the broad academic areas are represented. Members of the review committee shall elect their own chairmen. Effective Date: Spring, 1990 Current policy Nominations shall be reviewed by the Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorship Fund Committee composed of six members drawn two each from the Faculty Welfare Committee, the University Research Council, and from the Distinguished Teacher Award Committee. The respective committee Page 2 chairmen shall consult so that each of the broad academic areas is represented on the review committee. Members of the review committee shall elect their own chairmen and serve one year terms from January 1 to December 31. Rationale The current policy does not provide for continuity on the committee. Consultation with faculty who have served on the committee over the last several years indicates that problems have arisen with committees not always following consistent practices in evaluating nominees as well as Senate guidelines in presenting the awards. Committees have discussed and debated requirements because a newly-appointed committee was not fully aware of what prior committees had done. Last-year's committee held special sessions to discuss and make recommendations for changes that increase the likelihood of the future committees being consistent and following Senate guidelines. Providing for continuity of membership seems the best way to solve the problems that have arisen. Recommendation: The current committee should select three of their members to carryover to 1990-91.
