THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2490s Date of Senate Approval 3/8/90 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #18: Catalog Changes in Environmental Studies Effective Date: Fall, 1990 DELETIONS/ADDITIONS to the current catalog statements: (NOTE: proposed deletions/additions are in bold face). 1. Add the following track option description to the catalog after the Track in Natural Resource Management (page 128): General Environmental Studies Track: The student with advice from his/her academic advisor and approval of the program director may select a course of study for preparation in a career area such as: Environmental Policy, Environmental Journalism, Human Ecology or Zoo and Aquarium Management. Rationale: The ESP has been making personalized degree options available to students with permission of the faculty committee. This will formalize and simplify the procedure. Page 2 2. Modify ENVR 239 to read as follows (page 129): Delete: the current course description for ENVR 239. Add: 239 Mineral and Energy Resources (3) Survey of major mineral and energy deposits. Overview of mining and exploration methods, as well as population, political, and strategic considerations. The course will include at least one field trip to a working underground mine. Prerequisite: 105 or permission of the instructor. EIS: None Rationale: The original ENVR 239 was to be taught by faculty from the Sociology Department. Although requests were made, no one has had time in their schedule to permit them to do it. With the addition of Dr. William Miller, we now have interest, expertise and the faculty time. This course has never been offered, but will be in 1990-91. The new description reflects Dr. Miller's geology training. 3. Add the following new course (page 131): 385 Soils and Land Use (4) The origin, properties, distribution, and classification of soils. Land use practices and interrelationships of soil and pollution. Laboratory will include several field trips. Prerequisites: 130, CHEM 141-142 or permission of the instructor. EIS: A. Effect on major/minor --- This course will be available as an advanced elective to ENVR majors, as well as majors in chemistry, biology and education. B. Effect on University requirements - none C. No effects on other departments are anticipated. Rationale: This will permit us to add an advanced elective in an area which all of our degree tracks can benefit from. Many of our glaring environmental problems are soil/land use related. This will allow us to take advantage of a skill recently added by our staff geologist and it will fill out his course responsibility for the program. 4. Delete Environ Sci 130 as prerequisite to Environ Sci 339. 5. Add the following to the Track in Pollution Analysis and Control description (page 127): 34 hours distributed as follows: ENVR any three from 331, 338, 339, 362; CHEM 221, 222, 223, 231, 232, 332; PHYS Page 3 131, 231. Students must take Math 191-192 for their Math requirement. EIS: None Rationale: Majors in this track frequently try to negotiate a lower math requirement. Calculus has always been the math requirement for this track, but we want to formally call attention to that fact.
