THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1790S Date of Senate Approval 2/8/90 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #13: Catalog Changes in Chemistry Effective Date: Fall Semester, 1990 Environmental Impact Statement: We are not aware of any major, minor, and university requirements that will be affected by the proposed changes outside of the Chemistry Department. (There may be a small decrease in the number of students choosing German and Differential Equations courses due to our proposed changes). Item I Page 92, UNCA Catalog Major in Chemistry for the Bachelor of Science Degree Presently: II. Required courses outside the major--23 hours, including MATH 191, 192, 291, MATH 391 or 394; PHYS 221, 222. III. Foreign language requirement--GERM 210 and 220. Page 2 Change To: II. Required courses outside the major--20 hours, including MATH 191, 192, 291 (MATH 394 is also highly recommended for those planning to go to graduate school in chemistry); PHYS 221, 222. III. Foreign language requirement--GERM 110, 120 are recommended to meet the foreign language requirement (GERM 210, 220 are also highly recommended for those planning to go to graduate school in chemistry). Rationale: 1. German at the intermediate level is no longer a set requirement for American Chemical Society certification although it remains highly recommended for those planning to go to graduate school in chemistry. This change brings our foreign language requirement more in line with the UNCA general education requirement and lends more flexibility to our program. 2. Differential equations is no longer a set requirement for American Chemical Society certification although it remains highly recommended for those planning to go to graduate school in chemistry. This change lends more flexibility to our program. Major in Chemistry for the Bachelor of Arts Degree Presently: II. Required courses outside the major--16 hours, including MATH 191, 192; PHYS 221, 231, or 222. III. Foreign language requirement--A minimum of six semester hours. IV. Other departmental requirements--same as for the Bachelor of Science Degree. Change to: II. Required courses outside the major--16 hours, including MATH 191, 192; PHYS 221, 231 (or 222). III. Other departmental requirements--same as for the Bachelor of Science Degree. Rationale: It is not necessary to list the foreign language requirement separately since it is identical to the UNCA general education requirement. Page 3 Major in Chemistry for the Bachelor of Science Degree with a Concentration in Clinical Chemistry Presently: I. Required courses for the major--34 hours, including Chemistry 221, 222, 223, 231, 232, 321, 323, 331, 332, 411, 432, 443, 444. II. Required courses outside the major--23-25 hours, including MATH 191, 192; PHYS 221, 231, or 222; BIOL 105 or 131, and 338. III. Foreign language requirement--A minimum of six semester hours. IV. Other departmental requirements--same as for the Bachelor of Science Degree. Change to: I. Required courses for the major--33 hours, including CHEM 221, 222, 223, 231, 232, 321, 323, 331, 332, 432, 443, 444. II. Required courses outside the major--25 hours, including MATH 191, 192; PHYS 221, 231 (or 222); BIOL 105, 338. III. Other departmental requirements--same as for the Bachelor of Science Degree. Rationale: 1. Chemistry 411 (Biol 411) is no longer being taught by the Biology Department as a separate course. The Chemistry Department does not have the necessary staffing to offer the course and we wish to "sunset" it from the catalog offering. 2. Biol 131 is no longer being offered by the Biology Department, so this course is no longer an option for this major. Item 2. Page 94, UNCA Catalog. Delete: CHEM 133 Introduction to Chemistry. Rationale: This course, designed for high school students, has not been offered in several years. Item 3. Page 4 Page 95, UNCA Catalog. CHEM 331 Introductory Physical Chemistry Presently: Prerequisites: 142 and 6 hours of Math. Change to: Prerequisites: 142; MATH 191. Rationale: This introductory course in physical chemistry requires some knowledge of calculus. Item 4. Page 95, UNCA Catalog. CHEM 339 Techniques of Instrumental Pollution Analysis (ES 339) Presently: Prerequisites: 223,224 and ES 130. Change to: Prerequisites: 223,332 and ES 130. Rationale: CHEM 224 is no longer offered; it has been replaced by CHEM 332. Item 5. Page 95, UNCA Catalog. CHEM 341, 342 Modern Physical Chemistry Concepts I and II Presently: Prerequisites: 232, PHYS 222, MATH 291; Pre- or co-requisite: 223. Change to: Prerequisites: 232, PHYS 221, MATH 192; Pre- or co-requisites: 223, PHYS 222 (or 231); MATH 291. Rationale: Fine tuning of pre- and co-requisites. Page 5 Item 6. Page 96, UNCA Catalog. Delete: CHEM 411 Biochemistry Laboratory (BIOL 411) Rationale: This course is no longer offered by the Biology Department and the Chemistry Department has no available faculty time to pick up the instruction. Item 7. Page 97, UNCA Catalog. CHEM 432 Advanced Chemical Analysis Presently: Prerequisites: 332 and either 331 or 341; MATH 291 and PHYS 222. Change to: Prerequisites: 332 and either 331 or 341; MATH 192; PHYS 222 (or 231). Rationale: Fine tuning of prerequisites. Item 8. Page 97, UNCA Catalog. CHEM 443, 444 Clinical Chemistry I and II Presently: Prerequisites: 222, 223, 323, 331 and 332 (or 341). Change to: Prerequisites: 222, 223, 323, 331 (or 341) and 332. Rationale: Catalog statement is incorrect.
