THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1190S Date of Senate Approval 1/25/90 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #8: CATALOG CHANGES IN SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Effective Date: Fall, l990 I. BIOLOGY, PAGE 86: TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN BIOLOGY DELETE Complete section ADD Replacement for above-deleted section; namely: All secondary certification students must complete a major in biology and include in their course of study BIOL 443, 444. In addition, they must complete CSCI l26, MATH l64 or l9l, PHYS l05, ENVR l05 and those requirements indicated under the Education section of the catalogue. Biology majors who wish to be certified in Comprehensive Secondary Science or Middle School Science (as distinct from Biology) must also complete ATMS l05. In addition, it is highly recommended that those seeking middle school certification have a second area of concentration, preferably Mathematics. All students must contact the Department of Education for specifics. Page 2 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT This would limit the biology certification student to three to four hours of electives, rather than the six to eight hours allowed for non-certification majors. However, it should also be noted that though all biology majors would now be required to have PHYS l05, ENVR l05 and, possibly, an additional three-four hours in mathematics (MATH l64 or l9l), the overall result is fewer hours for the student because of changes in requirements effected by the Biology, Education and Psychology Departments. Agreement to make this change in the Biology section of the catalogue has been received from the Department of Biology, as evidenced by the attached letter from Dr. Comer, Chair. RATIONALE This request is in line with those aforementioned changes effected by the Department of Biology. In addition, it represents a positive response to some of the concerns of NCATE and SDPI, the national and state accrediting agencies for the UNCA Department of Education. II. CHEMISTRY, PAGE 93: TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN CHEMISTRY 1) ADD (Bracketed portions) Students . . . . for the Bachelor of Arts degree, [BIOL l05, PHYS l03, ENVR l05], the Education .... [All students must see the Education Department for specifics]. 2) DELETE Entire second paragraph, page 93. ADD Students seeking to be certified in Comprehensive Secondary Science or Middle School Science (as distinct from Chemistry) must complete those courses required for secondary certification as well as ATMS l05 and ENVR (BIOL) 24l. It is also highly recommended that those seeking middle school certification have a second area of concentration, preferably Mathematics. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The programs for certification add four semester hours to the student's requirements. However, it should be noted that this addition is offset by the deletion of previously-mandated hours in ATMS, EDUC, and PSYC which has resulted in a reduction of 7-8 hours in the total programs (major plus General Education plus Education and Psychology Page 3 requirements. The attached letter from Dr. Squibb, Chair of the Department of Chemistry, reflects agreement to make this change in the Chemistry section of the catalogue. RATIONALE This new structuring would allow for positive response to certain of the concerns of NCATE and SDPI. In addition, without sacrifice of quality, they approach the l28-30 hour limit desired by UNC General Administration. III. PHYSICS, PAGE 189: TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN PHYSICS DELETE I, II as well as the second paragraph ADD I. Required courses in the major -- 32 hours: l03, 22l, 222, 323, 324, 325, 33l, 332, 400, 40l, 402. II. Required courses outside the major -- 29 hours: MATH l9l, l92, 29l; CHEM l4l, l42; BIOL l05; ENVR l05. (For additional certification requirements, see Education section and Department). Students desiring certification in Secondary Comprehensive Science must add ATMS l05 and CHEM 23l to their programs. Those desiring Middle School certification must add ATMS l05 and ENVR l30. It is also highly recommended that those seeking middle school certification have a second area of concentration, preferably Mathematics. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT In comparison to the current programs: l) For the secondary certification student, this change would require an additional 9 hours in science course-work. However, because of reductions in the education and psychology requirements, the net addition in the student's total program is zero. 2) For the Comprehensive Science student, the result is a reduction of seven hours in required science courses. Also, the five - six hours reduction in education and psychology coursework means that the proposed program represents ll-l2 hours less than the current program, and only one hour more than that taken by the Applied Physics major. 3) Similar to the Comprehensive Science (Physics Major) Program, the proposed Middle School Physics Page 4 Certification Program reflects a l2- l3 hour reduction in requirements. RATIONALE The changes would allow for positive response to major concerns of NCATE and SDPI. The appended response from Dr. Ruiz, Chair of the Department of Physics, indicates his agreement to include these catalogue changes under the Physics section in the catalogue. MATHEMATICS EDUCATION PROGRAMS Page l72: TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN MATHEMATICS DELETE All of Section II. ADD Replacement for above-deleted section; namely: II. Other required courses -- l8 hours, including one of the following two course sequences: Chemistry l4l-l42 or Physics 22l-222 (8 hours); and Computer Science l4l and 243 (6 hours); and Statistics 225 (4 hours). ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Though it appears that this change would add 4 hours to the student's program, the net result is two hours less because of the reductions in education and psychology requirements. The attached letter from Dr. Kay indicates his agreement to place this change under the Mathematics section of the catalogue. RATIONALE The addition of the statistics course would satisfy the major concern of the NCATE National Council of Teachers of Mathematics reviewers.
