INSERT the following: Replacement of Grades A student may choose to repeat a course, regardless of grade earned. Only the new quality points and semester hours credit will be used in the calculation of the grade point average. A student may take advantage of this forgiveness clause up to a maximum of 15 semester hours credit. However, the student's permanent record shall be a complete record of all courses attempted and the evaluations received for these attempts. This policy shall take effect with courses first taken beginning with the Fall semester 1990-91. This policy applies only to course credits earned at UNCA. Rationale: Currently, students receiving an F for a course may re-take the course and have the F removed from the computation of Page 2 the GPA. This option does not apply to students receiving a D or higher. It is therefore to the student's advantage to fail a course rather than earn a higher grade. Furthermore, many academic departments now require minimum grades in specific courses for declaration of major. There are ample reasons why students do not perform up to their personal expectations for a course. The new policy gives students an opportunity to increase their mastery of course material by re-taking courses and to have those successes reflected in their GPAs.
