THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0589F Date of Senate Approval 12/14/89 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________ Date __________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________ Date ______________ Denied _______________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC #4: ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL AS NEW GRADING CATEGORY Effective Date: Fall 1990 INSERT the following as the last paragraph of the section labelled "Withdrawals From A Course" on pp. 45-6 of the 1989-90 catalog: By the official withdrawal date an instructor may administratively withdraw from a course any student who has not fulfilled the prerequisites for the class. Students who are administratively withdrawn will receive the grade W on their transcripts. Implementation: At the beginning of each term/semester, faculty members may request information from their students regarding completion of prerequisite courses. Students without course prerequisites or equivalent experiences should be encouraged to withdraw from those courses. If a student refuses to withdraw, the faculty member may administratively withdraw the student at any point up to the withdrawal date. The faculty member should inform the student of the intent to withdraw him/her prior to submitting the withdrawal form. Administrative withdrawal requires only the signature of the faculty member on the withdrawal form. The Registrar shall notify the student of receipt of the signed withdrawal form and record a grade of W. Page 2 Rationale: Currently there is no way to enforce course prerequisites. Faculty do not have the authority to remove from a course students who have mistakenly been admitted to that course. Although in some cases students may have sufficient background to enroll without course prerequisites, many students underestimate the degree to which they will have difficulty with course material. Faculty may encourage students to withdraw but cannot remove a student against his/her wishes. Under the new policy, faculty may withdraw such a student if the lack of prerequisite courses is impeding the student's progress. The policy is flexible; faculty are not required to withdraw students who are making satisfactory progress without prerequisite courses. This is consistent with the policy of waiving prerequisites and issuing "permission of instructor" to enroll in a course.
