Uldricks The March 9th meeting of the Faculty Senate was called to order at 3:35 pm in the Whitman Room of Ramsey Library by Chair Charles Prokop. The minutes of the February 9th Senate meeting were approved as written. Administrative Report Dr. Wilson distributed the following administrative report. I. Mathematics - interviewing Psychology - interviewing Spanish - interviewing Executive Committee Report Dr. Prokop reported for the Executive Committee. Dr. Prokop presented Executive Committee Doc #2 - Catalog changes in NCSU 2+2 Engineering Program. Dr. Friedenberg moved approval of EC Doc #2. Ms. Nelms seconded the motion. EC #2 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #2489. Academic Policies Committee Report Dr. Friedenberg reported for the Academic Policies Committee. Dr. Friedenberg moved the following documents for approval: APC #16 - Admission to major requirements in Music. Dr. Whatley seconded the motion. APC #16 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #2589. APC #17 - Catalog changes in Music. The motion was seconded by Ms. Marshall. Discussion ensued concerning listing adjunct professors in the catalog. Ms. Marshall supported listing the adjuncts in this particular situation, but suggested that the Senate Chair establish criteria for listing adjuncts in the future. Dr. Prokop agreed that criteria should be considered. APC #17 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #2689. APC #18 - MLA catalog changes. Dr. Mitchell seconded the motion. Dr. Friedenberg moved an amendment to add a one paragraph description under Post-Baccalaureate Study. Dr. Comer seconded the amendment which passed. Dr. Friedenberg moved a second amendment regarding the location on the MLA program in the catalog. Dr. Mitchell seconded the Page 3 amendment which passed. Discussion returned to the main document. APC #18 passed unanimously as amended. APC #18 became Senate Document #2789. APC #19 - Catalog changes in Environmental Studies. Dr. Mitchell seconded the motion. Dr. Friedenberg proposed a friendly amendment to APC #19. At this time APC #19 was tabled until after discussion of APC #24 - Biology. APC #24 - Catalog changes in Biology. The motion was seconded by Dr. Whatley. After a lengthy discussion on sequencing and General Education requirements, Dr. Mitchell called the question. APC #24 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #2889. Discussion returned to APC #19 - Catalog changes in Environmental Studies. Dr. Mitchell seconded the motion. In a friendly amendment, an insertion was made in the document. Editorial changes were made to renumber course 372 to 382. In a friendly amendment, additional wording was added to the document for clarification purposes. The question was called and APC #19 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #2989. APC #20 - Catalog changes in History. Dr. Whatley seconded the motion. Discussion concerning 377-History of American Business followed. Dr. Friedenberg moved to split the document into two parts: APC #20-A which consisted of 377-History of American Business, and APC #20, which addressed the remainder of the original document. The motion was seconded by Dr. Mitchell. Discussion of APC #20 followed and Dr. Friedenberg called the question. APC #20 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #3089. Dr. Friedenberg moved approval of APC #20-A. The motion was seconded by Dr. Hantz. After a lengthy discussion, Dr. Hantz called the question. In a friendly amendment, course number 377 was changed to 317. The motion passed with two opposing votes and one abstention. APC #20-A became Senate Document #3189. APC #23 - Catalog changes in Literature and Language. Ms. Nelms seconded the motion. After a lengthy discussion on exemption, Dr. Mitchell called the question. APC #23 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #3289. APC #26 - Catalog status for Leadership course. Dr. Whatley seconded the motion. Dr. Friedenberg moved to amend the document from a one-credit course to a two-credit course. Ms. Marshall seconded the motion. After discussion, the amendment passed with one opposing vote and two abstentions. Mr. Wengrow then moved to remove the S/U grading of the course which was seconded by Dr. Patch. The amendment carried with two opposing votes and two abstentions. Discussion returned to the main document as amended. The document passed with one opposing vote. APC #26 became Senate document #3389. APC #21 - Catalog changes in Education (Foreign Language certification program). The motion was seconded by Dr. Mitchell. APC #21 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #3489. APC #27 - Revision of Academic Warning catalog copy. Dr. Whatley seconded the motion. After discussion, the document Page 4 passed with two opposing votes. APC #27 became Senate Document #3589. APC #22 - Admission to major requirements in Math. The motion was seconded by Dr. Mitchell. In a friendly amendment, a substitution was made in one sentence. The document passed with one opposing vote. APC #22 became Senate Document #3689. APC #25 - University policy on declaration of major. The motion was seconded by Dr. Whatley. After discussion, Mr. Wengrow made a motion to delete the sentence, "Students must fulfill . . . a major." and all other references in the document to the requirement to fulfill the Bibliography requirement before declaring a major. Dr. Patch seconded the motion. A lengthy discussion ensued concerning General Education requirements and the Bibliography course. Dr. Browning called the question. The amendment passed 7-5 with one abstention. Discussion returned to APC #25 as amended. APC #25 passed unanimously as amended and became Senate Document #3789. Dr. Friedenberg announced that there were no other documents before the APC at this time. The next APC meeting will be held March 23rd. Institutional Development Committee Report Dr. Browning reported for the Institutional Development Committee. Dr. Browning presented a document concerning Undergraduate Research focus at UNCA for first reading. This document was written by Dr. Wilson and was unanimously approved by the UPC and IDC. Dr. Prokop suggested that the Executive Committee review the document and report back to the Senate on March 30th. The IDC has reviewed the Chemistry Department's Self-Study. IDC will be reviewing Atmospheric Sciences' and Physics' Self-Studies, and will have final discussions on Thrust proposals at their next meeting. Faculty Welfare and Development Committee Report Dr. Nickless reported for the Faculty Welfare and Development Committee. Dr. Nickless moved to table FWDC #4 - Amendments to Tenure Policies and Regulations, and FWDC #5 - Amendments to Senate Document #9, 1983-84 until the March 30th Senate meeting. The motion was seconded by Dr. Hantz and passed unanimously. Dr. Nickless distributed FWDC #6 - Rules for Elections, and moved that the Comer first-reading rule be waived. The motion was seconded by Dr. Mitchell and passed with one opposing vote. Dr. Nickless moved approval of FWDC #6 - Rules for Elections with editorial changes under numbers 3 and 4. Dr. Mitchell seconded the motion. Discussion followed and Dr. Browning called the question. FWDC #6 passed unanimously and became Senate Document #3889. Page 5 Old Business Due to the late hour, Dr. L. Wilson's proposal regarding unclassified students was tabled until the March 30th Senate meeting. Dr. Prokop distributed an excerpt from Senate Document #44 (1982-1983) relevant to the proposal. New Business There was no New Business. Dr. Prokop adjourned the meeting at 5:50 PM.
