Senate Doc #4989S Approved 4/27/89 IDC #4 Recommendations from Physical Sciences Self Studies The membership of the University Planning Council received and reviewed the self studies of the three physical science programs, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics. Each program submitted recommendations for consideration by the UPC. The following recommendations were endorsed by the UPC to address requests common to all three programs. -- UPC recommends that as soon as funds become available an electronics technician be hired to service electronic equipment in academic departments. -- UPC recommends that the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs designate a faculty group to examine the five-hour general education science requirement. -- To address the shortage of students interested in the Sciences UPC urges that Chemistry and Physics meet with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to consider strategies for attracting more students including modifying or adding a BA Degree. -- UPC recommends an additional laboratory manager position for the science departments pending the availability of funds. -- UPC supports the requests that the renovation of Rhoades Hall be completed as soon as adequate resources are available. Recommendations for specific programs: Atmospheric Sciences -- UPC recognizes the need for additional operating funds and supports that request pending the availability of additional funding. -- UPC endorses the need for an additional faculty member at some future date pending the availability of resources. -- UPC endorses the need for additional student temporary wage to support student lab assistants. -- Recommend the instrumentation of the microwave tower weather station in 1991-92 at a cost of $10,000. -- Recommend moving Atmospheric Sciences to department status as soon as possible. -- UPC strongly encourages Atmospheric Sciences to develop an assessment program for its majors. Chemistry -- UPC recognizes the need for additional operating funds especially in student temporary wage and educational supplies and supports that request pending the availability of funding. [This recommendation was rejected by the Senate by a  vote of 4-6.] Page 2 Physics -- UPC urges the Chair of Physics to meet with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to discuss departmental guidelines for tenure. -- UPC recognizes the need for additional operating funds and supports that request pending the availability of additional funding.
