Senate Doc #3289S Approved 3/9/89 APC #23 Catalog changes in Literature and Language Effective Date: Fall, 1989 Catalog Revisions: 1. Catalog p. 138 DELETE: LANG 105 2. Catalog, p. 41 REPLACE section on ENGLISH LANGUAGE with: ENGLISH LANGUAGE (3-9 semester hours) Students must fulfill the English language requirement by demonstrating proficiency at the level of Language 102. Depending on performance in the writing placement test, a student may begin the English Language sequence with Language 100, 101, or 102. English Language Courses (LANG) 100 Writing Essentials 3 semester hours 101 Writing as Inquiry 3 semester hours 102 Writing and Critical Thinking 3 semester hours Proficiency in Writing -- A grade of "C" or better in any freshman language course will be considered proficiency for that course. Students who fail to demonstrate proficiency must repeat the course. Rationale: With the development of Honors sections of LANG 102, there is no longer any clear function for LANG 105. This program revision will reduce the composition requirement for entering Freshmen with good writing skills or with previously earned credit (AP, CLASP, or transfer credit). We have been exempting only a few outstanding students from the first three hours of the six-hour requirement. Such students took only LANG 105. Other students, judged above average, began with LANG 102 and continued with LANG 105, while average writers fulfilled the requirement with LANG 101-102 or 101-105. Under the current proposal, the above-average group would exempt 101 and take only 102. The attached diagram indicates possible options. This arrangement gives us an even-handed, proficiency-based requirement. Page 2
