Effective Date: Fall 1989 Associate Professor Greenawalt (Chairman); Professors Ready, Walker; Associate Professor Uldricks; Assistant Professor Spellman; Instructor Kathleen Nilan The purpose of history is to provide a broad liberal arts education which addresses fundamental questions about the nature of humanity, of society, of past experiences, and of the times in which we live. UNCA history graduates use their training in numerous ways: half the majors have entered careers in business and education, while the remainder are employed in such fields as national and state government, in law, medicine, banking, the military, the ministry, social service, law enforcement, graduate study, and archival work. These fields and others demonstrate the diversity of careers entered by those trained in history. Program in History I. Impact Statement 1. It will be necessary to change the description of the joint major in History and Political Science as found on p. 176 in the Political Science section to conform to the new description of the history program. Chairman Farzanegan is aware of this and concurs. 2. Changes in the foreign language requirements are effective immediately and cover all currently declared majors. B. Rationale The revisions proposed include three significant changes, which are: 1. Addition of History 452 Senior Research Seminar. This seminar will replace the written exams as the Senior demonstration of competency. The growth in library holdings can now support a variety of directed research projects, while the emphasis on written papers can contribute to the undergraduate research effort and provide appropriate responses to the annual call for papers at the state Phi Alpha Theta convention each April. 2. Deletion of a requirement for competency at the intermediae level of a foreign language. Currently only one other department and one program call for this competency at the intermediate level. Our current requirement exceeds the demands placed on majors at such schools as Duke, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, Smith, Davidson, and Mount Holyoke, to mention a few. Reduction to a six-hour requirement will align us with most UNCA departments, while it will allow the easier development of a social studies certification with a major in history. Page 5
