Senate Doc #2589S Approved 3/9/89 APC Document #16 Admission to Major Requirements in Music a) Effective Date: Fall, 1989 b) Delete: NA c) Add: (UNCA 1988-89 catalog, page 160, as the third paragraph) ADMISSION TO THE MAJOR IN MUSIC: Students wishing admittance to either the B.A. or B.S. Degree Program in Music must: (1) pass an instrumental or vocal audition placing them into Applied Music 291 (or higher); (2) complete Class Piano II or demonstrate equivalent competency; and (3) either pass the UNCA Music Theory/Aural Skills Entrance Examination or successfully complete Introductory Music Theory (Musc 131). Audition guidelines are available from the Music Department. d) Environmental Impact Statement: The number of inquiries into the music degree programs has been steadily increasing due to increased visibility, both statewide and nationally; we expect the overall number of music majors to also increase. We expect the principal impact of this policy to be an increased number of music majors who actually complete the music degree program once admitted. We expect a slight increase in the number of students enrolling in Music Theory (Musc 131) which may require us to offer it in both the fall as well as the spring semesters. No additional resources are anticipated as a result of the continuance of this policy. e) Rationale: We instituted this policy in the spring of 1988. It appears to satisfactorily meet our need to identify those students who are in possession of the most basic knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete our music degree program requirements (which include a Degree Recital as well as Senior Comprehensive Examinations in Music Theory and Music History).
