Senate Doc #2389S Approved 3/2/89 APC Document #15 Catalog Changes in Physics Effective Date: Fall, 1989 Add: On p. 172 of current catalog, between 103 Astronomy and 105 Contemporary Physics: 104 Radioactivity and Society (3) A course for the general student covering the basics of radioactivity including applications to issues of current interest. Add: On p. 43 104 Radioactivity and Society and 103 Astronomy in list of courses acceptable for 3 credit Natural Science requirement. Environmental Impact Statement: This course will not affect the departmental requirements in any department or program. We would like to request that this course be included in the list of the 3-hour interdisciplinary science courses that can fulfill the General Education Requirement. Rationale: There is a general lack of understanding of radioactivity in today's society. This lack of understanding, coupled with a general fear of anything having to do with radiation and the number of current issues in which radioactivity plays an important part, makes a course in the fundamentals of radioactivity a reasonable one to offer. The course will include topics from a wide range of disciplines and so should be listed as one of the 3-hour courses which will fulfill the General Education Requirement. Page 2
