Senate Doc #1989S Approved 3/2/89 APC Document #11 Admission to major requirements in Art A) Effective Date: Fall 1989 B) Add: page 59, after second full paragraph ending in "necessary transfer credit equivalence." and before Bachelor of Fine Arts: Department Admission Requirements Entry into either the BA or BFA program requires the completion of a major declaration form. This is done through the student's advisor. Initially students will declare the BA as the program of study within the department. When a student has accumulated (transferred or UNCA credit) 24 hours of Art with a 3.0 in the courses taken, the student may apply for admission to the BFA program directly. BA or non-declared students who complete 24 hours in Art with a 3.0 GPA may apply for a change to the BFA program track. This is done according to "The Guide to the BFA Program" document. Copies are available in the Art Office. Only when the requirements for entry to the BFA as described in the "Guide" are met, can the student submit a major declaration in the BFA program track. C) Delete: page 60, D) (See "Guide for Exhibition" requirements). D) Add: page 60, D) "which is administered in the Spring and Fall semester every year". Rationale, 3.0 GPA, for BFA: 1. In constructing the BFA track the National Association of Schools of Art (NASA) and the College Art Association (CAA) 1979 Standards Report was used. In consideration of the NASA and CAA Standards (these are the accrediting agencies for Art programs) we followed the recommendation of these accrediting associations and required the 3.0 average in art courses taken for entry as well as exit. 2. The BFA is equivalent to an Honors Program in Art. It again is appropriate for an Honors Program to expect at least a 3.0. 3. Most graduate schools granting the MFA require a 3.0 for entry into their programs. Page 2
