Senate Doc #1489S Approved 3/2/89 APC #6 Requirements for Admission to Certification Program Effective: Fall, 1989 Add on p. 105 a new paragraph inserted between the first and second paragraphs (after "any UNCA student." and before "Certification Requirements.") Teacher Education Program Admission Requirements All students who seek formal admissions to the Teacher Education Program must fulfill these requirements: 1. Junior standing in the undergraduate curriculum. In some cases students in their sophomore year may be formally admitted to the Education program. (This assumes that students have completed most of the General Education courses.) 2. A 2.5 cumulative grade point average for all course work taken at UNCA. 3. Demonstration of successful completion of Educ 310 Introduction to Education, K-l2, by achieving a C grade or higher. 4. Acceptable scores on the National Teachers' Examination (NTE) Core Battery I Test of Communication Skills and Core Battery II Test of General Knowledge as determined by the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. 5. Positive review of the student's file by the Teacher Education Committee based on a rating of average or higher for each of the abilities and characteristics listed on the "Requirements for Certification" form issued by the Education Department. Environmental Impact: This admissions policy is not expected to significantly affect the numbers of our majors. 22% of our students who took Educ 310 over the last two years achieved less than a 2.5 G.P.A. by the end of that semester. However, only 14% of these students or 3% of the population considered have subsequently been admitted into the Education Department. Rationale: These admissions standards respond to the requirements placed on our Teacher Education Program by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The purpose of these standards is to ensure a high level of achievement within our teacher education program and the high quality of our graduates. The Page 2 adoption of these standards will place our admissions policies in line with other Teacher Education Programs in the state. Page 3
