EFFECTIVE DATE: Summer 1988 DELETE: 323 Development of Consciousness (p. 173) Major theories of consciousness, its historical and individual development. Students will engage in self-exploration and development projects. Prerequisites: 100, 303, or permission of instructor. ADD: 423 Development of Consciousness Examines the growth of individual consciousness from historical, life-span, and transpersonal perspectives. It covers major theories of consciousness from William James to the present, as well as traditional ones. Prerequisites: Page 2 100, 303, 304, or permission of instructor. (No credit for students who have credit for Psy 323.) ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: In terms of psychology majors and undergraduates in general: The change has virtually no impact. The course was originally given a three hundred number designation only because the department has a general policy of putting Psy 304 (Research Methods II) as a prerequisite for all four hundred level courses. Unlike most advanced psychology courses, however, its content is more theoretical and literary than empirical and data based, so the "permission of instructor" stipulation is used quite freely where advanced students are concerned. In terms of its level of content it clearly qualifies for a four hundred number. In terms of the MLA program: It simply cannot be listed as an MLA course with its present three hundred level designation. RATIONALE: I hope to teach it this Summer cross-listed as an MLA course.
