THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0488F Date of Senate Approval 11/10/88 Signature of Senate Chair _________________________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval ________________________ Date ______________ Denied ________________________ Date ______________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #3 Effective Date: Fall Semester 1989 Delete the 1988-1989 catalog description of Physics 100 (page 172) - Astronomy: 100 Astronomy (2) The evolution of stars, comparative planetology, black holes, and other topics for the general student. Add the following as a replacement for the above description of Physics 100 - Astronomy: 103 Astronomy (3) A course for the general student covering the solar system, constellations, the evolution of stars, and cosmology. Page 2 Also: (A) change the number of hours required in the major under the Program in Teacher Certification in Physics (page 172 in the 1988-1989 catalog) from 31 hours to 32 hours, (B) change the required course in I. from 100 to 103 (page 172), and (C) add Phys 103 Astronomy to list of 3 hour science courses for General Education requirement (page 43). Brief rationale: We request an upgrade from 2 semester hours to the standard 3 semester hours that will enable us to cover the material presented in the course in more depth than was possible with the 2 semester hour course. Environmental Impact Statement: This course, Physics 100 - Astronomy, is required for a Teacher Certification in Physics here at UNCA. Either this course (Astronomy) or PHYS 101 (Light and Visual Phenomena) can fulfill one of the required courses in the major for this certification. PHYS 101 is currently a 3 semester hour course. If a student currently chooses to take PHYS 101 to fulfill this requirement, he/she will end up taking a total of 32 hours in the major instead of the 31 hours if PHYS 100 were taken. We have obtained approval from Dr. Gwendolyn Henderson, Associate Professor of Education, allowing us to increase the required courses in the major from 31 hours to 32 hours for the Teacher Certification in Physics. Making PHYS 100 a 3 semester hour course will get rid of the discrepancy between 32 hours fulfilled when PHYS 101 is taken and 31 hours fulfilled when PHYS 100 is taken. We also request that this course be included in the list of the 3-hour National Science courses that can fulfill the University's General Education Requirements due to the general nature of this course that can appeal to all disciplines on campus.
