Honors Semesters are hosted by NCHC member institutions, with the approval of the NCHC. (An example of an Honors Semester is included in the catalogue copy below.) Approval means that: 1. Honors Semester courses will be granted elective or general education credit, as agreed to beforehand, and as deemed appropriate by the Registrar. 2. Departments will be encouraged (but not mandated) to accept relevant courses in fulfillment of their major requirements. Page 2 3. The Senate approves UNCA's entering into a consortium agreement with NCHC Honors Semester host institutions, for the purpose of transferability of Pell grants (standard procedure mandated by Federal Title IV Student Aid legislation), and to facilitate transferability of other scholarships offered through UNCA. The consortium agreement enables students to apply financial aid to the cost of Honors Semesters. CATALOGUE COPY: University Scholars Honors Program (P. 50-51) DELETE: existing statement ADD: The material below will be inserted as part of a larger catalogue statement. (Complete copy to be submitted for Senate consideration later in the fall semester; this document is submitted now to facilitate student application to the 1989 United Nations Honors Semester.) Students in the University Scholars Honors Program are eligible to enroll in off-campus "Honors Semesters" offered through the National Collegiate Honors Council. These semesters involve courses and field experience at NCHC member institutions. Course credits earned during an Honors Semester are transferred back to UNCA, according to prior arrangement with the Registrar and the relevant academic departments. Depending on the type of financial aid students may be receiving while enrolled at UNCA, grants and scholarships may be applied to the cost of the Honors Semester at the host institution. The NCHC also offers some scholarship support. Previous Honors Semesters include the Grand Canyon Semester, the Washington Election Semester, the Mexican Honors Semester, and the United Nations Semester. Honors Semester curriculum is illustrated by the recent United Nations Semester offered by the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University: UNS 300: The City as Text: Languages of Exploration (3 credits) UNS 301: Comparative Democratic Theory and Practice (3 credits) UNS 304: International Issues, Politics, and the UN: Laboratory in International Organizations and Non-Governmental Agencies (4 credits) UNS 311: Contemporary Urban Cultures (3 credits) UNS 306: Urban Institutions (3 credits) UNS 392: Independent Study Field Research Projects (3 credits) Page 3
