           This is a proposal to up date the certification requirements

           mandated by State certification guidelines.  Although the

           attached proposal comes from Dr. Henderson, the Department of

           Biology concurs in these changes.

           Rationale:



           A.  Because of state-mandated competency needs, biology

               certification students do not have the degree of choice

                                                         ____

               enjoyed by the regular major.  The former must take

               those courses listed under the change.



           B.  There is no such thing as a "second area of concentration

               in science/mathematics for the middle school."  In

               addition, the listing of courses must be clear as to 

               what is required.  In other words, students are required

               to take CSCI 141; it is not among the group from which

               six hours may be chosen.
