POLICY DRAFT TRANSFER CREDIT FOR GENERAL EDUCATION The guidelines for accepting transfer equivalents to UNCA general education courses should be relatively flexible and generous. Because our general education program is distinctive, Page 2 transfer students will not be able to present exact equivalents to our courses in humanities, arts, and natural science. Transfer courses in these areas should be accepted as meeting UNCA requirements when they are compatible with the broad goals of general education at UNCA. The credit hours of transfer courses do not have to be the same as UNCA requirements; for example, in some cases, a three-hour course with appropriate coverage might meet a four-hour UNCA requirement. The VCAA should establish a task force consisting of administrators who evaluate transcripts and of faculty members. This group should meet with representatives of general education programs to negotiate guidelines for transfer credit. Administrators who evaluate transcripts should request the formation of such a group whenever general education requirements change or whenever an accumulation of procedural questions seems to require a review.
