Exemption requests must be supported by a faculty member and the program director from the academic Page 2 department or program offering the course from which a student is seeking exemption. Forms for applying for exemptions may be obtained from the Registrar." _________ RATIONALE The old catalog read "specifically exempted by the Degree Program Committee." The wording in the current catalog provides no instruction about how to go about requesting an exemption. Dr. Wilson and Dr. Prokop have handled the recent cases by funneling information to the VCAA, and letting him rule on the cases. The form, submitted to his office by the student, would accomplish the same thing. Requiring the support of a faculty member and the director of the affected program makes sense, and also should prevent the submission of casual, "let's give this a try and see what happens" exemption requests. ______ DELETE pgs. 45-46, "Individual Degree Programs" "A student interested in pursuing an individual degree works out a program jointly with his or her faculty advisor and major department chairman and submits it to the Degree Programs Committee. The proposal for an individual degree must be supported by a persuasive educational rationale in harmony with the institutional aims and objectives. If the proposal is deemed appropriate, the Degree Programs Committee, composed of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and two faculty members appointed by him from each of the three general academic areas, may waive fixed University requirements and approve the proposal for an individual degree program." _______ ____ REPLACE WITH "A student interested in pursuing an individual degree works out a program jointly with his or her faculty advisory and major department chairman and submits it to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Proposal forms are available in the Registrar's office. The proposal for an individual degree must be supported by a persuasive educational rationale in harmony with the institutional aims and objectives, and must explain why the student's educational objectives cannot be met within the context of one of the traditional UNCA majors. The proposal will be evaluated by a committee composed of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the chair of the Academic Policies Committee of the Faculty Senate, and a third faculty member as chosen by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. If the proposal is deemed appropriate, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs may waive fixed University requirements and approve the proposal for an individual degree program." Page 3 _________ RATIONALE This system is essentially the same as the prior system, with the replacement of the DPC with the three-member ad-hoc committee. An explanation of why an individual program is preferable to a traditional major is part of the current application process; this makes the requirement explicit at the start.
