A student whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 at the end of any semester is placed on Academic Warning, which is not a punishment but a way of extending help to those in academic difficulty. Students who Page 2 are on Academic Warning will be notified by the Registrar that their schedules have been blocked and they must see a special academic advisor. These students are normally limited to 14 credit hours per semester and to light summer loads. -------------------------------- Rationale: "Academic Warning" replaces the traditional "Probation" policy. It is different from a suspension and dismissal policy in that _____ it provides an early and clearly defined mechanism to identify and counsel weak students. Institutional Research has demonstrated that few of our students whose CGPA's are below 2.0 in their first two years eventually graduate. Further, our attrition problem correlates very closely with academic achievement. Clearly, then, this group deserves our special attention. The APC leaves the definition of a "Special Academic Advisor" to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the Office for Counselling and Advising. The intent of this policy is to assure that these students be given special attention by some advisor before pursuing further inappropriate study that might continue to diminish their chances of graduating. The above policy statement can stand alone. It doesn't conflict with existing academic eligibility statements since "Academic Warning" is not elsewhere mentioned. It is the intention of the APC, however, to follow this policy with a clearer and fairer suspension and dismissal policy that will replace the existing "Academic Eligibility" section.
