      Statement of Faculty Senate Action: 



      FWDC Document #17                               28 January 1988



      In order to promote faculty development at UNCA, the FWDC

      presents the following plan for a "Sense of the Senate".



                   A FIVE YEAR PLAN FOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AT UNCA



            ________

        I.  Teaching



            A.  Establish a University Teaching Council (UTC, see

                FWDC Document #8).



            B.  Increase funding for enhancement and the development

                of teaching:



                a.  On a competitive mini-grant basis for research or

                    course development.

                b.  Via funds for library travel and other activities

                    directly related to improving pedagogy.



                    Responsibility:  Passage by Faculty Senate.

                                     Support by VCAA.

                    Source:          VCAA:  Target substantial funds

                                     from the 88-89 academic budget.

                                     University Relations:  target

                                     $3,000 for 88-89, with continual

                                     yearly augmentation.



            C.  Establish in-house teaching development programs.



                Responsibility:  Teaching Council (Spring 88)



            D.  Establish "Master Teacher" lectures and seminars



                Responsibility:  Teaching Council (Spring 88)



            E.  Implement more awards, prizes, pronouncements and

                recognition for good teaching, as funding warrants.



            F.  Review, monitor, and make recommendations regarding

                the process of teacher evaluation.

            G.  Establish, assign mentors for new faculty members.

            H.  Review support for the Learning Resources Center

                and other offices which directly support teaching

                functions.

            I.  Hold a Planning Retreat for the UTC, URC and FWDC,

                to establish roles regarding faculty development.
