This will be an institutional committee composed of faculty members and administrators. I. THE PURPOSE OF THE COMMITTEE IS AS FOLLOWS: A. To encourage and facilitate improvements in methods and techniques of teaching on the part of all members of the UNCA faculty. Page 2 B. To encourage and facilitate participation in Institutional research and development regarding teaching activities when such programs transcend the normal activities of institutional or administrative offices. C. To aid faculty and administrators in identifying and pursuing sources of funds for improvement of teaching. D. To serve as an advisory board regarding guidelines for all grant proposals regarding teaching, especially those which involve continuing matching funds on the part of the institution. E. To advise the administration on matters relevant to the encouragement and support of improved teaching. F. To award intramural funds for the support of teaching as they become available. G. To participate in the selection process, including formulation of job description and hiring criteria, for personnel involved in fund-raising and grantmanship of such a nature as to be of concern to this Council; and to provide continued counsel regarding the responsibilities and activities of such personnel. H. To establish mechanisms for the recognition of superior teaching in the form of additional awards and acknowledgements. The duties of this Council shall include the determination of the recipient for the Distinguished Teaching Award. The committee shall follow the current guidelines for selecting a recipient of that award until or unless the committee shall propose amendments to the Senate to those guidelines. I. To develop seminars and other methods, both intramural and extramural, for the exchange of ideas concerning pedagogy. J. To work with University Relations to seek outside funding to support current and future activities of the UTC. II. COMPOSITION OF THE TEACHING COUNCIL The University Teaching Council shall be composed as follows: A. Five members of the Council shall be faculty members, at least two of which will be former recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Award, with one representative from each of (1) the arts, (2) management and accounting, education, physical education, (3) the humanities, (4) Page 3 mathematics and the natural sciences, and (5) the social sciences. These members shall be recommended by the Chair of the Faculty Senate subject to the approval of the Faculty Senate. The term of appointment shall be for two years, except that in the first year three members shall be elected for two years and two members for one- year terms. Those members who will serve one-year terms shall be selected by lot. One member of the FWDC shall __ _______ sit as an ex officio member of the UTC. B. Two additional members of the Council shall be admini- strators appointed by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. At least one of these appointments must be from the area of Academic Affairs. III. OFFICERS A. The officers of the Council will be Chair and Secretary, elected by the Council on an annual basis from the faculty representatives on the Council. IV. DATE EFFECTIVE A. The University Teaching Council will be effective following its appointment in Spring of 1988.
