The award of an honorary doctorate by UNCA is intended to recognize distinguished achievement in scholarship, science, the arts, or public service. Responsibility for the awarding of honorary degrees is vested ultimately in the UNCA Board of Trustees. The "Delegation of Duty and Authority to Board of Trustees," adopted 7/7/72 by the UNC Board of Governors, provides as follows with regard to honorary degrees, awards, and distinctions: The Board of trustees shall be responsible for approving the names of all individuals on whom it is proposed that an honorary degree or other honorary or memorial distinction be conferred by the institution, subject to such policies as may be established by the Board of Governors. In carrying out its responsibility for the conferring of honorary degrees, it is the policy of the Board of Trustees ordinarily to seek the guidance and counsel of the Chancellor and a representative University body to be known as the Honorary Degrees Advisory Committee (HDAC). The HDAC shall be comprised of the following members: (a) Four faculty elected by the Senate. (b) The President of the Student Government Association or designee. (c) The President of the UNCA Alumni Association or designee. (d) The Vice Chancellor for University Relations, who shall serve as Chair. Nominations or suggestions of persons to receive honorary degrees are welcomed from all persons interested in the welfare and stature of the University: faculty, trustees, students, and others. The names of persons nominated or suggested are to be reviewed by the HDAC, which shall make its recommendations through the Chancellor to the Board of Trustees. The Chancellor shall customarily submit any nominations of his own to the HDAC for their recommendation. Initial responsibility for receiving and reviewing the recommendations of the Chancellor and the HDAC is delegated to the External Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. At its discretion, however, the Board may elect to act as a Committee-of-the-whole in considering nominations for honorary degree recipients.
