APC #33 Senate #33 Approved 4/17/87 APC Document #33 April 9, 1987 Attached are requested changes in the catalog listing for the Department of Mathematics. ___________ _______ ___________________ RECOMMENDED CATALOG CORRECTIONS/CHANGES __________ __ ___________ DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS 1. p. 143 Under "Program A...I. Required courses in the major." This should read (change is underlined): I. Required courses in the major - 36 hours, including Mathematics 191, 192, 280, 291 (15 hours), 3 hours in __ __________ Mathematics 380, and an additional 18 hours in courses numbered... p. 143 under "Program B... I. Required courses in the major." Identical wording as above for first 2 lines under "I. Required courses..." Rationale: Greater clarity in what department wants in the major. 2. p. 144 under "Program D... I. Required courses in major": __ ___ In place of (Math) 266 alone, write "266 or 365." Rationale: Allows the major to use a more sophisticated linear algebra course to satisfy this requirement. 3. p. 145, numbering of Math 131, 132: Change 131 to 157 Change 132 to 158 Rationale: To make it possible for students in education to receive credit for present MATH 131 or 132 after having taken MATH 155 (all college requirement, Nature of Mathematics). ___ Note: Elementary Education students are not exempt from this course; math majors are. Page 2 4. p. 146, prerequisite listing for Math 163: Change from 162 to 105 Rationale: Math 162 no longer exists; Math 105 replaces that. 5. p. 148, number and prerequisite for Math 462, Theory of Numbers: Change 462 to 368 and change prerequisite "361" to "280" Rationale: This course is never taught as a strictly senior course only for very advanced students. It should be a more "recreational" type of course, so this change will make the level of the course fall more in line with the way the department now intends to teach it. 6. p. 191, course description for STAT 228: Change "interactive APL programs" to "statistical packages." Change prerequisite to read: STAT 125, 185 or 225 Rationale: More accurate course description and to take into account the new higher level statistics course 185 we have added. 7. p. 191, prerequisite listing for STAT 325, 327: Change to read (as in #6): STAT 125, 185 or 225. 8. p. 192, prerequisite for STAT 425: Change to read: Prerequisite: MATH 291. Rationale: Having 225 as a prerequisite serves no useful purpose at the present time. Math 291 (Calculus III) is more appropriate.
