Senate #30 Approved 3/25/87 A PROPOSAL TO MODIFY THE PERIOD OF TENURE OF UNCA FACULTY ASSEMBLY REPRESENTATIVES From: Faculty Welfare and Development Committee To: UNCA Faculty Senate Date: 12 March, 1987 Proposal: UNCA representatives and alternates to the UNCA Faculty Assembly will serve terms of three years. The faculty will elect two alternates to serve terms concurrent with the two elected representatives. (the changes above will be added to the description of Faculty Assembly representatives included in the Faculty Handbook. See: Vers. VII, '86, page IV-5, sect. viii.) Rationale: The University of North Carolina at Asheville elects two representatives to the UNC Faculty Assembly, and one alternate. These representatives and alternates from UNCA currently serve terms of two years. The tenure of the elected representatives, as specified by the By-Laws of the Faculty Assembly of the University of North Carolina, may range from one to three years. Most of the UNC institutions opt for three year representation. This allows for a greater degree of continuity for year to year representation. The UNCA representatives would also have a better chance of serving on Faculty Assembly committees, since three years would give them more opportunity to become known to their colleagues in the Assembly. The changes described above have been recommended by both of our current representatives to the Faculty Assembly. The addition of one alternate will help to insure that UNCA always has representation.
