Add the following under ATHLETICS: An intercollegiate athletic program should promote the basic aims and objectives of the University including developing a strong sense of ethics as well as a sound mind and body. It should be educationally sound contributing to the growth of the student athletes. In addition, the scope should be such that non-participants have an opportunity to broaden their college experience. Finally, the stature of the University should be enhanced locally, regionally and nationally by achieving athletic prominence while retaining academic integrity. The University of North Carolina at Asheville is committed to an athletic program that supports the above philosophy. Students interested in participating in athletics must fulfill the general admissions requirements of UNCA. Once in attendance in order to compete they must meet NCAA standards and be in good academic standing as established by the University for all students. The emphasis is on a successful athletic experience while maintaining normal progress toward a degree. The University of North Carolina at Asheville is a member of the NCAA in Division I and the Big South Conference. Intercollegiate competition at the varsity level is offered in basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis for men and basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball for women. Facilities include Justice Gymnasium with basketball courts, a swimming pool and weight room and extensive newly developed outdoor playing fields plus 12 tennis courts. In addition, many intercollegiate basketball games are played in the Asheville Civic Center, an excellent spectator facility that seats 6800.
