APC #10 Senate #12 Approved 12/29/86 APC Document #10 December 11, 1986 _ ________ __ ______ _ ______ __ ___ _____ __ ________ A Proposal to Create a Policy on the Award of Advanced _________ ______ Placement Credit ____ _______ _________ ADD to UNCA Catalog 1986-1987, pg. 30, following the second paragraph: Advanced Placement Credit UNCA academic credit of 3 to 6 semester hours will be granted to matriculated students who receive scores of 3, 4 or 5 on Advanced Placement tests offered by the College Board. The specific amount of credit and course waivers offered are determined by the academic departments for whom Advanced Placement Tests are available. A schedule of credit and waivers is maintained by the Office of Enrollment Services. Advanced Placement credit accepted at other post-secondary institutions is not automatically transferred to UNCA, but is reviewed in accordance with this schedule. ------------------------------------------------------------ (To implement this policy, the Senate requests that the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs do the following: a. Purchase examples of all current AP test booklets from the College Board. b. Distribute these booklets at a meeting of the Council of Chairmen, stressing the desireability of awarding 6 credit hours unless there is strong evidence that only 3 hours is warranted. In addition, the VCAA should provide some guidelines on the kinds of course waivers reputable schools allow. c. Collect and review departmental responses to the AP tests, compiling a schedule of credit and waiver(s) to be offered for specific tests. d. Publish a schedule of AP test credits and waivers offered for all AP tests, for distribution to admissions, guidance counselors and departments.) Rationale: At present there is no catalog statement concerning the acceptance of AP credit, although it is in fact current practice to award credit in English, math and biology. Most reputable Page 2 schools with whom we are competing for excellent students have generous policies concerning the acceptance of AP credit. Making a specific catalog statement will clear up confusion about AP credit and aid in recruiting students for the Honors and Undergraduate Fellows programs.
