APC #8 Senate #10 _____ Approved _____ APC Document #8 December 11, 1986 _ ________ __ ______ ___ ________ __________ __________ A Proposal to Revise the Academic Probation, Suspension ___ _________ ______ and Dismissal Policy ____ _______ _________ DELETE from UNCA Catalog 1986-1987, pg. 27, Academic Eligibility: Whole section. ADD to same section: Academic probation is not intended to be a punitive sanction against students who fail to meet the academic standard noted below. It is intended, rather, as a means to identify, notify and extend help to students who seem, for whatever reason, to be jeopardizing the possibility of their eventual graduation. The University of North Carolina at Asheville has established 2.0 as the minimum grade point average which must be met by students wishing to continue their studies at the University. A grade point average of 2.0 on work attempted at UNCA since the beginning of the 1978 Fall Semester is required for graduation. Also, a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required on all work attempted at UNCA in the major department. (Work completed prior to Fall 1978 is not computed in the grade point average.) A student whose grade point average at the end of any term is below 2.0 will be placed on academic probation. Students on probation are limited to 12 hours in a semester and to 8 hours in a summer session. Probation regulations apply to all classifications of students. Probation notices will be printed on grade report forms at the end of each term. Students are expected to be aware at all times of their academic status and to be responsible for knowing whether or not they are on academic probation. If, at the end of two semesters (excluding summer terms) on probation, the overall grade point average is below a 2.0, the student will receive a one-semester suspension from the University. Suspended students may be readmitted after one semester and will then have two semesters in which to bring their overall grade point averages to the 2.0 minimum. Students who have not achieved a 2.0 minimum GPA by the end of 4 semesters on probation will be dismissed. No student who has been dismissed for academic cause will be considered for readmission for a period of one year. This new policy will become effective with the grades earned at the end of the 1987 Fall Semester. Continuing students who are on probation (either initial or terminal) at the beginning of the 1987 Fall Semester may continue on probation for two semesters. The Academic Appeals Board has the authority to reconsider individual suspension and dismissal cases where there may be extenuating circumstances, especially where students are demonstrating substantial progress toward removal of probationary status. ADD to Faculty Handbook: An Academic Appeals Board shall be comprised of four (4) ranked faculty members who serve one year renewable terms. Members shall be recommended by the Faculty Welfare Committee and appointed by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Board shall be charged with the expeditious review of written appeals from suspended or dismissed students. It shall be empowered to authorize the readmission of suspended or dismissed students where sufficient substantial cause has been demonstrated to convince the Board that a student does currently have the ability and motivation to complete his degree program in a timely manner.
