APC #6 Senate #9 Approved 12/29/86 APC Document #6 December 11, 1986 _ ________ __ ______ ___ ___________ _________ ___ A Proposal to Change the Corequisite Statement for ____ ____ ___ __ ________ ____ _______ __ ____ _______ PHYS 222, and To Renumber PHYS 111/112 to PHYS 131/231 ____ _______ _________ DELETE from UNCA Catalog 1986-1987, pg. 163, 222 Physics II: "or C or better in 221." CHANGE course numbering of PHYS 111 & 112 to PHYS 131 & 231 respectively. ADD to course description for PHYS 131 (old PHYS 111): "May not be taken for credit if student has already successfully completed PHYS 111." ADD to course description for PHYS 231 (old PHYS 112): "May not be taken for credit if student has already successfully completed PHYS 112." ---------------------------------------------------------------- Rationale: The Physics Department has made exceptions in the past to its co-requisite of MATH 291 for PHYS 222, the calculus-based Physics II course for the sake of servicing the Chemistry and Computer Science departments, which do not require MATH 291, Calculus III. However, they have determined that this in fact impedes the progress they should be making in this course. Calculus III is the language of this advanced physics course, and should be learned concurrently with the physics principles introduced. The Physics Department will continue to service non-majors by offerring the material introduced in the old PHYS 112 at the 200 level. Thus, the typical Chemistry or Computer Science major would take the sequence of PHYS 221 and PHYS 231, both upper-level physics courses not requiring Calculus III.
