APC #3 Senate #5 Approved 11/18/86 Senate Document #5 1986-87 APC Document #3 1986-87 A Proposal to Create 2 New Courses in the Classics Department Add to UNCA Catalog: 1986-7 pg. 80: Classics 105 Hebrew for General Education I (3) Introduction to Hebrew Language, literature, and culture. Intended specifically for the satisfaction of the General Education Foreign Language Requirement. This course is a practical introduction to the reading and understanding of Hebrew, including writing and pronunciation and the minimum of grammatical work consistent with the understanding of Hebrew literature. Includes basic information on Hebrew and Jewish culture as revealed through its classical literature. Classics 106 Hebrew for General Education II (3) Continues the work of Classics 105. Mastery of more vocabulary and grammatical points to enable understanding of more, and more complex material in the literature and culture. Rationale: Previously approved by the APC, Hebrew was not listed in the catalog for lack of faculty to teach it. Now, two local rabbis with college teaching experience have offered to teach the courses on a regular basis. There is adequate demand by pre-seminarians in this and neighboring schools. Effective date: Spring, 1987.
