Senate Document #47 4/24/86 APC Doc. #30 1985-1986 CHANGES IN HONORS PROGRAM The Faculty Senate and the Chancellor aproved the establishment of the Honors program in spring of 1985. The document enabling the program included general guidelines which serve as the basis for more specific policy that has been developed by the Director in conjunction with the Honors Program Council (faculty advisory committee). The document also specified the framework of require- ments for graduation as an Honors student. Following from the first year's experience with the program, the Director and the Council ask APC to approve the following changes. CHANGE (from original document): To be designated an Honors Program graduate at commencement, students must have a 3.00 average in all Honors work attempted, including at least two of the general education Honors courses and Honors 494 (Senior Colloquium). TO: Graduation as a University Scholar requires a GPA of 3.00 over- all and in Honors courses. University Scholars must complete at least five Honors courses, for a total of at least fifteen hours. The five course/fifteen hour requirement will include HON 363: Junior Seminar and HON 492: Senior Colloquium. The courses will be selected from HONORS sections of General Education courses and special topics courses carrying the HON label, in addition to HON 363 and HON 492. RATIONALE: Enthusiastic response to the program and a review of Honors programs at other institutions reveals that the three course requirement was too modest. The five course/fifteen hour requirement is much more appropriate. Inclusion of the Junior Seminar* demands that each student participate in an inter- disciplinary course especially designed for the program. The Senior Colloquium has been relabeled 492, with two credit hours (the original 494 carried 1 - 6 hours credit), given the establishment of a particular colloquium format that will grant two hours credit based on a departmental project; the departmental project will be awared credit within the department at the discretion of the major department. The colloquium itself includes goals and expectations that justify a separate two hour credit. * Junior Seminar was part of the original document, but was not required.
