Senate Document 38 APC Document #26 1985 - 1986 BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT Biology: New Major Requirements The Biology Department has taken the opportunity of the new general education requirements to review its requirements for the major in Biology. As a result of these deliberations the Biology Department wishes to modify its requirements as shown: Track A - Biology I. Required courses in the major - 7 hours, including 105, 451 and 452. II. Restricted electives in the major - 20 hours. A student must choose at least one course from each of the following course groupings: A. Biological Diversity -332, 333, 334, 335 B. Ecology - 221, 241, 341, 442 C. Physiology - 345, 355, 339 D. Molecular - 245, 346, 443, 444 A student must take one course from each of these two groups: 1) 334 or 335 2) 332 or 333 III. Free electives - 8 hours. A student must take two additional courses in Biology, numbered 300 or above. IV. Required courses outside the major - 21 hours, including CHEM 141, 142, 231; STAT 125; CSCI 141 or 142 or 143; MATH 163 or higher numbered course in MATH. Biology Minor 21 hours in Biology including 105 and 16 hours chosen from ...(contiue as in current catalog) RATIONALE: The Biology Department's goal statement suggests a curriculum emphasizing research methods. The proposed major requirements fulfill this commitment by exposing students to the principal research approaches to the study of living organisms: systematic (diversity); ecological; physiological; and molecular/cellular. In addition, a Biology major should have familiarity with both plant and animal diversity--we are therefore requiring one course in each of those areas.
