Senate Document #31 1985-86 Academic Policies Committee Document #23 1985-86 Proposal 1. To increase the credit hours in the major for all five music degree programs from 36 to 40. 2. To add four one-credit hour courses to the major: MUSC 201 Aural Skills I (1) Laboratory for ear-training and sight-singing. Recommended co-requisite: 231. MUSC 202 Aural Skills II (1) Continuation of 201. Prerequisite: 201; Recommended co-requisite: 232. MUSC 301 Aural Skills III (1) Continuation of 202. Prerequisite: 202; Recommended co-requisite: 331. MUSC 302 Aural Skills IV (1) Continuation of 301. Prerequisite 301; Recommended co-requisite: 332. Rationale: 1. A preliminary and informal discussion with the accrediting agency (National Association and Schools of Music) has indicated that there would be no hope for accreditation if the major does not conform to the minimum standard of "one-third of the total hours in the degree". 2. The music faculty, after 3 1/2 yers of evaluatiang the program, has determined the area of aural skills would be best served by an independent course. 3. Aural skills have been being taught as part of the theory sequence with students doing the regular 2 1/2 lecture hours, plus 2 lab hours for 3 credits. This results in an inordinate amount of work and diminished results. 4. The proposed chance does not add to the teaching credit hours. Faculty load has been 3 hours lecture and 1 hour lab for the theory courses. It would remain the same.
