Senate Document #25 1985-86 Academic Policies Committee Document #14 CATALOG CHANGES TO ACCOMPANY GENERAL EDUCATION LANGUAGE CHANGES: Catalog Changes for German Herewith are proposed changes in German for the next catalog. As you know, they follow a package sent to you already which dealt with changes due to the GE requirement in FL. 1. p. 119 under "Tract A - German" Delete: Entry I. Add: I. Required courses in the major - 27 hours in courses numbered 300 or above. Of these, three courses must be numbered 400 or above. Required 310, 320, 420, either 440 or 450, and 485. Reasons: The changes guarantee that students will graduate with sufficient language proficiency, and give students, more flexibility in their selection of literature courses. 2. p. 119 under "Track B. . ." Add: (After the final sentence of the statement) Required: 310, 320, and 340. Reasons: The first two courses insure sufficient language proficiency; the 340 course provides essential training in phonetics. 3. p. 119 under "Minor in German" Delete: current statement Add: 18 hours in courses numbered 300 or above. Required: 310, 320, 420. Recommended: 350, 351 Reasons: To insure a high level of language proficiency even in students minoring in German. 4. p. 120 Delete: 211, 221 Reading and Translating Techniques in German Reasons: The courses have not been given in at least 7 years and are unlikely to be offered again. 5. p. 120 Delete: 330 German Literature Before Lessing with description Add: 331 Survey of German Literature Introduction to the development of German Literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Reasons: Experience has shown the need for a survey course fairly early in the major program. The course to be deleted dealt with subject matter too diffucult for a 300-level course. 6. p. 121 under 440 and 450 Delete: Required of all majors in German. Reasons: Only one of the two courses will be required to allow students more choice in their major. 7. p. 121 under 440 and 450 Delete: (Drama, Prose or Poetry) Add: (Drama, Prose and/or Poetry) Reason: This change gives the instructor more freedom in tailoring the specific topics to the needs of the students. 8. p. 121 under 460, 465, 480 Delete: (Drama, Prose or Poetry) Add: (Drama, Prose and/or Poetry) Catalog Changes for French Herewith, proposed changes in French for the next catalog (in addition to those already submitted for French 110, 120; and 310, 320.) 1. p. 116 under 330 Delete: "to" Substitute: "through" (i.e. "A broad view of French literature from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, etc.) Reason: Most available textbooks make this chronological division, presenting pre- & post- 1800 texts in seperate volumes. 2. p. 116 under 331 Delete: "the development of French literature from the 18th century to the present" Substitute: "19th & 20th Century Literature" (i.e. "A broad view of 19th & 20th century literature, etc.) Add: "and minors" (i.e. "One survey [330 or 331] is required of all majors and minors.") 3. p. 116 under 410 Change to: "French poetry and/or prose of the 16th century. Prerequisite: 320."
