Senate Document #9 November 14, 1985 APC Doc. #6 PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE MUSIC CURRICULUM: RATIONALE: The following changes were proposed after study of the degree program core, the cognates, the electives for majors, and the service courses for non-majors, in compliance with directives from the Goals Assessment Committee and as a result of the continuous evaluation and refinement of the program since its inception in 1982. I. PROGRAM CHANGES A. Catalog page 147 Change Roman Numeral I for all five degree programs to read: (revision in caps) "Required courses in the Major--36 hours, including 231, 232, 331, 332, 351, 352, 353; 8 hours in Applied Music, 4 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level; 4 hours of APPROVED Ensemble and 6 hours of approved Ensemble and 6 hours of APPROVED music electives at the 300 or 400 level in AREA OF EMPHASIS." Prerequisite: Music 131 or permission of the instructor and keyboard familiarity. 3. 232 Music Theory II (3) Description Change Emphasis on extended tonality through altered chords and modulation in art and vernacular musical styles (including jazz); complete parametric analysis, composition, ear training and sight singing, with laboratory. Prerequisite: Music 231 4. 331 Music Theory III (3) Description Change Emphasis on expanded chordal vocabulary and extended tonality through altered chords, chromatic and enharmonic modulation; 16th and 18th Century contrapuntal techniques, parametric analysis, composition, ear training and sight singing, with laboratory. Prerequisite: Music 232 5. 332 Music Theory IV (3) Description Change A study of alternatives to tonality in post-tertian harmony with emphasis on the application of tonal and non-tonal techniques; all styles of 20th Century music; complete parametric analysis, composition, ear training and sight singing, with laboratory. Prerequisite: Music 331 6. 334 Electronic Music - Digital (3) Description Change Hands-on introduction to microcomputers in electronic music composition; digital sound synthesis; composition project. Prerequisite: Electronic Music Composition - Analog 333 7. 351 Music History & Literature to 1750 (3) Semester hour and Description Change to: 351 Music History & Literature to 1750 (2) The history of music from primitive man through the mid-18th Century with an analysis of the respective literature. Prerequisite: Music 232 or permission of instructor 8. 352 Music History & Literature from 1750 (3) Semester hour, Title and Description Change to: 352 Music History & Literature 1750 - 1900 (2) The music of the late Baroque through the Classical, Romantic, and Impressionistic periods including style analysis of appropriate literature. Prerequisite: Music 232 or permission of the instructor. 9. 353 20th Century Classical Music (3) Semester hour, Title, and Description Change to: Music History and Literature from 1900 (2) Survey and analysis of 20th Century developments with emphasis on Stravinsky, Bartok, the Schoenberg School, atonality, electronic and experimental music. Prerequisite: Music 352 or permission of instructor. 10. 354 Jazz and American Popular Music (3) Title and description change to: 354 Music and Popular Culture (3) A survey of the relationships between music and popular culture in 20th-Century America, which traces the various currents of American music: folk, blues, jazz, rock, and various kinds of art. 11. 361 Jazz Improvisation (3) Description Change Discussion, illustration, and performance of improvised solos in various jazz styles; study of scale, mode, chord construction, and digital patterns: discussion of various approaches to solo building. Prerequisite: Music 232 or permission of instructor. 12. 382 Music Industry & Business I (3) Description Change A survey of the music industry with special emphasis on music publishing, copyright, licensing, agents, managers, attorneys, and merchandising. 13. 383 Music Industry & Business II (3) Description Change Surveys record industry, and other technologically-oriented areas of music enterprise: record markets, artists' contracts, record production and merchandising; also radio, telecommunications, and newly-developed technologies. Prerequisite: Music 382. 14. 171-3, 271-3, 371-3, 471-3 Special Topics in Music (1-3) Description Change Courses not otherwise included in the catalog listing but for which there may be special needs, such as: Form & Analysis, Counterpoint, Philosophy of Music, History of Jazz, Musical Theater, Media Arts, and Advanced Audio Engineering Technology. May be repeated for credit as often as permitted and as subject matter changes. 15. 241-242, 341-342, 441-442 Composition (1) replaces Compositon 461 Creative writing and original compositions in various forms and for varied media. Prerequisites: Music 332 or permission of the instructor.
