Senate Document #3 October 17, 1985 APC Doc. # 2 APC Proposals RE Curriculum Revisions for the Department of Economics: Economics 406 has been offered in prior years as a Special Topic and has proven appropriate for Program B. Economics 491 reflects a revision of the Department's requirements for the Senior Demonstration of competency and emphasis on policy applications of theory during the Senior year of the major. Students could not repeat 491 for major credit. Economics 491 and Economics 490 would normally be taken during the same semester, however, we request permission to allow students to split the courses between two semesters when academic and work schedules require. 1. Request for a new Economics Course Title: ECONOMICS 406 Seminar in Financial Economics (3 credit hours) Description: An application of financial theory to case problems. Issues include leasing decisions, capital budgeting, stock vs. bond financing, and financial forecasting. Prerequisites: ECONOMICS 306 or equivalent background Rationale: This would be a capstone course in the Money and Finance tract. At present, no course which applies financial theory exists in our curriculum (though it is common at other schools). 2. Request for a new Economics Course Title: ECONOMICS 491 Directed Research (1 credit) Description: Supervised research in selected economic problems. Problems analyzed will be complementary to the students Research topic in Economics 490. Prerequisite: Senior Economics Major and permission of instructor. Rationale: This course fills a gap in the Senior Demonstration of Competency. Students will examine policy issues from Micro and Macro economics plus issues from their chosen program of study. The student will demonstrate competency in economics by appropriate use of economic theory, concepts, and reasoning to propose policy solutions to selected issues. Each student will write on issues complementary to their work in Economics 490 to provide a broader assessment of the student's knowledge and skills. Catalog Changes: Change for Programs A, B, C, D description: Under I add 491, and change 34 hours to 35 hours. Under IV add 491. For Program E: IV add Economics 491. 3. Catalog Change Program B-Monetary Economics and Finance Change: Required courses in the major - 35 hours, including 200, 201, 210, 215, 300, 301, 365, 490, 491 and either 406 or 410. The student must also choose two from 305, 306, 310, or 350.
