Academic Policies Committee #1 Senate Document #2 October 17, 1985 Proposal: Policies Regarding General Education 1. All students who have registered as degree-seeking students at UNCA prior to Fall 1986 shall be bound by the All-University Requirements under which they entered. These students, however, may avail themselves of the following two General Education Program elements in place of the comparable All-University Requirements: A. One may satisfy the requirement of Bibliography by successfully completing a Competence Examination in Bibliography. B. One may follow either the old Physical Education requirement of 4 semester hours, or the new requirement. Rationale: This proposal is the most comprehensible to understand, the most simple to administer and the least disruptive of the models considered. The one option that will cause the least problem is the physical education mentioned in B above. The choice of fewer P.E. courses will help offset the greater demand on instructors' time caused by extending the P.E. courses through the entire semester, with two sessions per week. 2. Any student who enrolls in no courses for a twelve month period, beginning Fall of 1986, must, upon re-enrolling, meet all the requirements of the new General Education program. Courses previously taken under the All-University Requirements will be treated as transfer courses and will be accepted as equivalencies of courses in the General Education Program. Rationale: Students who withdraw from the University for a full 12 months are treated as new students who must re-apply for acceptance. This new acceptance implies a new contractual arrangement with the student. As we would accept equivalent courses from transfer students, we should act similarly for our own former students.
