THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE Faculty Senate Minutes November 13, 1984 Dr. Comer called a special meeting of the Faculty Senate in order to continue discussion on graduate programs and other items on the agenda for November 8, 1984. The Faculty Senate met at 3:30 pm in the Ainsley Whitman Room with Dr. Alan Comer presiding. Members Present: Dr. Bennett, Dr. Combs, Dr. Comer, Dr. Coyne, Dr. Dorr, Dr. Downes, Dr. Hollingsworth, Dr. Rackham, Dr. Ruiz, Dr. Seitz (alternate), and Dr. Williams Members Absent: Drs. Betts, Farzanegan, Grams, Greenawalt, Shoaf, Stern (alternate), and Mr. Wengrow Visitors: Drs. Bruce, Cochran, Prokop CONTINUATION OF INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT 1. Middle School Certification Dr. Ruiz moved that the Senate approve the renaming of the middle school program to tracks in the various respective areas. Dr. Coyne seconded the motion and called the question, and the motion passed unanimously. 2. Request to Plan a New Track in Health Psychology Dr. Ruiz moved that the Senate grant permission to plan for a program in the Psychology Department--the health psychology track. Dr. Rackham seconded the motion. Discussion followed and Dr. Ruiz moved to withdraw the original motion and instead made a motion to establish the health psychology track. Coyne seconded the motion. Rackham called the question and the motion passed unanimously. 3. Distinguished Teacher Committee Election At this time Dr. Coyne put forth the names of nine faculty for election to the Distinguished Teacher Committee for the Senate to elect four and two alternates. Half of those elected should be tenured. There were no nominations from the floor. The election held and the four faculty elected were Gullickson, Bennett, Seitz, and Perry. Dr. Coyne indicated that the Executive Committee had informally decided to let the Distinguished Teacher Committee decide among themselves which of the remaining nominees (Cooper, Jones, Walker, or Combs) will serve as alternates. Page 2 4. Master's Program in International Management Dr. Comer called to continue discussion on the motion that was tabled at the last meeting on the master's program in international management. It was the consensus of the Senate that it would be unfair to discuss this issue at this time due to the low number of members present. Dr. Hollingsworth moved to table the motion until the next Senate meeting. Dr. Ruiz seconded and the motion passed unanimously. 5. Master's Program in Liberal Studies Dr. Comer called to continue discussion on the motion that was tabled at the last Senate meeting on the master's program in liberal studies. Discussion followed regarding various issues such as permission to plan versus permission to establish, feasibility, comparisons between this master's program and the one in international management, differences between graduate and undergraduate education, etc. Dr. Ruiz made a motion that the Senate pass the request to plan for a liberal studies graduate program.
