SENATE DOCUMENT #30 ACADEMIC POLICIES COMMITTEE DOCUMENT #20 1984-85 The Academic Policies Committee recommends the addition of the following courses in the area of Foreign Languages. Italian (ITAL) 110, 120 Elementary Italian I, II (3, 3) Introduction to Italian language and culture through classroom and laboratory instruction. Emphasis on the spoken language. Open for credit to beginners and those referred by placement test or departmental evaluation. 210, 220 Intermediate Italian I, II (3,3) Thorough review of Italian grammar. Reading to develop comprehension and speed. Writing of simple compositions. Intensive conversational drill. Prerequisite: 120 or equivalent. Russian (RUSS) 110, 120 Elementary Russian I, II (3, 3) Introduction to Russian language and culture through classroom and laboratory instruction. Emphasis on the spoken language. Open for credit to beginners and those referred by placement test or departmental evaluation. 210, 220 Intermediate Russian I, II (3,3) Thorough review of Russian grammar. Reading to develop comprehension and speed. Writing of simple compositions. Intensive conversational drill. Prerequisite: 120 or equivalent. Rationale: Both courses are now taught as special topics courses and have been highly successful. Highly competent adjuncts are available to teach. These courses support existing areas of UNCA strength and provide more option for students.
