SENATE DOCUMENT #16 ACADEMIC POLICIES COMMITTEE DOCUMENT #14 1984-85 The Academic Policies Committee recommends the following changes in the Departments of Economics and Political Science: The addition of a new program (E in Economics, G in Political Science) in each major with the same requirements in Political Economy: I. Required courses in the major -- 39-40 hours distributed as follows: ECON 200, 201, 310, 320, 341, 365; POLS 100, 250, 310, 347, 350, and 321 or 326; ECON 490 or POLS 490. II. Required courses outside the major -- 7 hours: STAT 125, PHIL 200 or 304. III. Foreign language requirement -- Foreign language options for non-science majors are allowed (see all-University requirements). IV. Other departmental requirements -- The Senior demonstration of competency is met by successfully completing either ECON 490 or POLS 490. Rationale: Economics and politics frequently interact. Macroeconomic policy, social security, environmental regulation, and energy policy are just a few examples of how economic judgments and political considerations intertwine in the policy making process. This joint program is designed for students interested in studying the economic theory and techniques used in policy analysis and the political environments in which policy decisions are made. Political Economy is an established area in both disciplines. This program takes advantage of existing staff interests and makes a new area available to our students at no cost.
