SENATE DOCUMENT #11 ACADEMIC POLICIES COMMITTEE DOCUMENT #6 1984-85 The Academic Policies Committee recommends the following changes in Atmospheric Sciences: 1. In Track A - Climatology Drop as required outside major: STAT 425, 426 Add as required outside major: STAT 225, CSCI 142 Rationale: The requirements of STAT 425, 426 are beyond what is needed for a B.S. in Climatology. The lower level statistics is enough. CSCI 142 (FORTRAN) is essential for graduate work and highly desirable for employment. Note that this increases in number of hours in the program by 1. 2. Change in credit for a course: Change credit on 205 (Weather Analysis) from 2 to 3 hours. Rationale: Additional staff allows this course to be taught as it should be with more meetings per week. 3. Change in total hours required for Program B - Weather Forecasting from 34 to 35. Rationale: Increased credit for 205. 4. Addition of a new course 305 Weather Forecasting (3) The science and techniques of weather forecasting, applications of map analysis and numerical guidance. Prerequisite: 205. Rationale: A second level course in weather forecasting principles and techniques is needed in a program in weather forecasting. 5. Change in requirements for Program B - Weather Forecasting Add 305 to required courses in the major Reduce the number of 300 level electives from 9 hours to 6 hours Rationale: The skills to be taught in 305 are really essential for a career in weather forecasting.
