Members Present: Dr. Betts, Dr. Combs, Dr. Comer, Dr. Grams, Dr. Greenawalt, Dr. Rackham, Dr. Shoaf, and Dr. Williams. The specially called meeting was for the purpose of enacting resolutions in response to the unexpected death of Harry Johnston, a long-time member of the Biology Department and former Division Chairman and Department Head. After discussion of the Biology Department's plans to memorialize its colleague, the Senate passed the following resolution: "The Senate on behalf of the entire faculty expresses its sympathy to the Johnston family and wishes to convey the Senate's sense of loss and its appreciation for Harry Johnston's years of service to the University and the Senate. To preserve the memory of his many contributions to the University of North Carolina at Asheville the Faculty Senate requests that an endowment be established as a memorial to Harry H. Johnston. Funds for this endowment are to be solicited from the UNCA community and alumni and are to be used for two purposes. First, a living memorial in the form of a tree shall be planted near the Rhoades Science Building. Second, remaining funds will establish a permanent endowment, the interest from which will support an annual award for excellence in Biology. The criteria and nature of the award will be determined by the Biology Department." Approved: Dr. Bruce Greenawalt Secretary, Faculty Senate
